What Do Fatty Esters, Chitin and Chitosan Have in Common?
Date:12/13/2012

FARMINGTON, Conn., Dec. 13, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Chitin and Chitosan are natural biopolymers. Fatty esters are the non-greasy and non-ionic derivatives of oleochemicals. So what do they have in common? These three compounds have become the materials of choice in a broad spectrum of industries, ranging from agriculture, food, pharmaceutical, metal and water treatment, to personal care and cosmetics, and plastics. For example, chitosan are important compounds for applications such as hydrogels for drug delivery systems, whereas chitin is extensively used in water treatment and neutraceutical treatments for joint health and fatty esters are the backbone of surfactants and specialty emollient applications. New applications will continue to drive growth in the fatty esters, chitin and chitosan markets through 2018.

Global Information Inc (GII) recommends two market research reports covering the global fatty esters and chitin and chitosan markets from our premium research partner Global Industry Analysts, Inc. The reports provide a comprehensive market review, documents current market trends, highlights key growth drivers; discusses recent product introductions and corporate initiatives; and profiles major/niche global as well as regional market participants. These strategic business reports also provide annual sales estimates and projections through 2018.

Chitin and Chitosan

The global market for chitin and chitosan is projected to exceed 118 thousand metric tons by 2018. Japan is the largest consumer of Chitin and Chitosan. Water treatment is the major end use application in the country, followed by cosmetics. Chitin and Chitosan are also used in the biomedical arena. Growing applications include use of the compounds in biotechnology and textile finishing. In terms of growth rate, Asia-Pacific ranks as the fastest growth market with a CAGR of 18.6% over the analysis period.

Segment-wise, Glucosamine represents the largest segment for chitin derivatives. Glucosamine is the most widely used ingredient in joint health medications. A majority of neutraceuticals formulated for joint health problems contain glucosamine/chondroitin mixture. However, with several food and beverage companies including glucosamine in their products, demand for glucosamine usage is no longer confined to the joint health segment. Chitosan is also a significant chitin derivative with numerous end-use applications. Out of the varied end-use applications of chitosan, water treatment accounts for the largest share of consumption. The end-use application is likely to retain its prominence over the analysis period, however, consumption of the biopolymer in medical/healthcare, agrochemicals, food & beverages and textile finishing is expected to pick up pace. The fastest CAGR is anticipated in agrochemicals at 17.6% from 2010 through 2018.

Major players profiled in the report include Advanced Biopolymers AS, CarboMer Inc., Heppe Medical Chitosan GmbH, Kunpoong Bio Co. Ltd., Meron Biopolymers, Primex Ehf, and Zhejiang Candorly Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd.

Fatty Esters

The global market for fatty esters is forecast to reach $2.2 billion by 2018. The US represents the largest regional market for fatty esters worldwide, as stated by the new market research report on Fatty Esters. Europe trails the US in terms of the sales of fatty esters. Growth-wise, Asia-Pacific is projected to be the fastest growing regional market registering a CAGR of about 3.6% over the analysis period. In terms of different types of fatty esters, Glyceryl Monostearate represents the single largest segment. However, fastest growth is likely to emanate from the Medium Chain Triglyceride Oil segment. Food sector represents the largest end-user of fatty esters. Personal care and cosmetics application is forecast to be the fastest growing end-use application registering a CAGR of 3.6% over the analysis period.

Major producers of fatty esters profiled in the report include ABITEC Corporation, Acidchem International Sdn Bhd, Archer Daniels Midland Company, Akzo Nobel N.V, BASF SE, Croda International Plc, Dupont, Faci Asia Pacific, Felda IFFCO LLC, Fine Organics, Gattefossé, Lonza Custom Manufacturing, PMC Biogenix Inc., Sasol Limited, Stearinerie Dubois, Stepan Company, Subhash Chemical Industries, Sumitomo Chemical Co. Ltd., and UNDESA Group, among others.
