Weight Loss Surgery Taste Study Underscores the Reason for the Success of Bariatric Procedures, says Dr. Feiz & Associates

A September 17 article on Medical News Today looks at the impact on flavor preferences on bariatric surgery patients. The study looked at patients’ preferences for certain foods and drinks both before and after procedures. It turned out that, prior to surgery, the patients said they preferred such popular high-calorie foods as ice cream, pizza, French fries, and burgers. Interviewed after the surgery, however, many patients reported that their favorite foods had become such healthy, low-calorie choices as vegetables and salads. Not surprisingly, these patients tended to lose more weight than the other subjects. Los Angeles based weight loss surgery clinic Dr. Feiz & Associates says that the results of the study line up with what it has seen with its patients.

The clinic says that, while the mechanisms that have caused our current epidemic of obesity are still largely mysterious, physicians and scientists are learning more every day about how the brain and the body conspire to make significant, permanent weight loss extremely difficult – as well as how they encourage us to become obese in the first place. Dr. Feiz & Associates notes that it may be some time before we figure out exactly why, for example, the people in the study who now said they enjoyed the smell of coffee more than previously appeared to lose more weight. However, the clinic adds that we already do know a great deal about the role of a hunger hormone called ghrelin in causing us to keep eating much more than enough food.

The problem, according to the weight loss surgery center, is that obese people already tend to produce significantly more ghrelin than others. Worse, when individuals begin losing weight, production of ghrelin appears to increase. While dieters are often highly committed to losing weight and improving their lives, the nagging pangs of hormonally driven appetite – which feels essentially identical to genuine hunger – tend to wear the vast majority of dieters down. The result, says the clinic, is that they backslide into their old habits and their former weight, perhaps with a few extra pounds added.

Dr. Feiz & Associates notes that people intuitively understand that procedures like sleeve gastrectomy make overeating uncomfortable. What they usually don’t know is that the procedure, which removes approximately 70-80% of the stomach, also appears to remove the area that produces much of the body’s ghrelin. Thus, apart from the discomfort associated with overeating following a bariatric procedure, they are also not as likely to be bothered by the kind of constant cravings that sabotaged their previous efforts. The clinic concludes that, while there is still much to be learned about obesity and its treatment, it’s clear that bariatric procedures are a reliable method of making weight loss not easy, but possible.
