Webmedx and NLP International Team to Bring Natural Language Processing Software to Medical Transcription
Date:9/27/2010

ORLANDO, Fla., Sept. 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Webmedx, the third largest medical transcription service provider in the U.S. and a premier supplier of speech recognition and quality analytics technology, today announced a partnership agreement with NLP International Corporation (NLPI), that will extend Webmedx’s technology and service solutions. Specifically, the partnership will enhance the data mining and search capabilities of the company’s QualityAnalytics™ product line. The announcement was made by Sean Carroll, CEO, Webmedx, at the 82nd AHIMA Convention and Exhibit in Orlando, Florida, Webmedx Booth #2125.

Webmedx will fully integrate NLPI’s advanced natural language processing (NLP) software into their QualityAnalytics solution thereby expanding customers’ ability to mine discrete, structured data from physicians’ transcribed, narrative reports. Termed Narradata™, this information can be used for a wide variety of secondary data uses in healthcare including core measures reporting, meaningful use quality reporting and clinical documentation improvement for RAC and other recovery audits.

“In today’s healthcare environment there are huge pressures to keep costs down while reporting and information requirements continue to rise. Increased productivity from technology, such as NLP, is needed to achieve these competing goals,” mentions Carroll. With QualityAnalytics, users search for specific data elements across literally thousands of narrative, transcribed reports in a matter of milliseconds resulting in a 60% time savings for nurses and other quality reviewers.  The technology also supports the coding process and accelerates the populating of electronic health records (EHRs).

The company chose NLPI because of their ability to support the high volume / high demand data requirements of healthcare. Their NLP search engine was developed over 20 years at Columbia University and is currently utilized at Columbia University Medical Center, one of the largest academic medical centers in the U.S.

Bernie Keppler, CEO, NLPI, explains that the partnership with Webmedx provides a perfect opportunity to leverage the power of NLP data mining and the company is honored to have been selected as their search technology partner. “The role, size and industry reputation of Webmedx, coupled with their technical expertise make this an ideal fit for our companies and our customers,” he concludes.
