Washington's Stop-Sale System Achieves Significant Results In Battle Against Meth
Date:7/17/2012

LUTHERVILLE, Md., July 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) – a nonprofit organization that facilitates cooperation between law enforcement, healthcare professionals, state regulatory agencies and pharmaceutical manufacturers in the prevention and investigation of drug diversion – today lauded the latest results achieved by the real-time, stop-sale system in Washington State.  The National Precursor Log Exchange (NPLEx) released data for the first six months of 2012 which shows electronic technology in the Evergreen State blocked the sale of more than 9,000 boxes of medicine containing pseudoephedrine (PSE) preventing more than 22,000 grams from potentially being diverted by meth criminals.

"It's been less than a year since Washington State launched real-time, stop-sale technology," said Charles F. Cichon, executive director of the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI).  "In that short period of time, the system has demonstrated very encouraging results. NPLEx allows retailers to block unlawful attempted purchases right at the point of sale, and provides law enforcement with critical information in real time. This targeted approach ensures that responsible consumers will continue to have access to the popular and reliable cold and allergy medicines they depend on for relief."
