Varian Medical Systems Spotlights Advanced Radiosurgery Systems at ISRS Congress in Paris, May 8-12
Date:5/6/2011

PARIS, May 6, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Varian Medical Systems (NYSE: VAR) is spotlighting its TrueBeam™ STx with Novalis® Radiosurgery program for fast and precise stereotactic radiosurgery cancer treatments at the International Stereotactic Radiosurgery Society (ISRS) congress in Paris next week. The Varian booth (Booth K) will focus on the capabilities of the company's TrueBeam™ STx with Novalis® Radiosurgery program for stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) applications, along with RapidArc® for volumetric modulated arc therapy.

"The ISRS Congress represents an important gathering of thought-leaders in the field of radiosurgery," said Rolf Staehelin, Varian's director, international marketing EMEA & APAC.  "The corner-stone of the clinical practice of radiosurgery are multidisciplinary teams of neurosurgeons, radiation oncologists and medical physicists, to name a few, and Varian is delighted to participate in such an important gathering."

"There are hundreds of radiosurgery-enabled Varian linear accelerators installed around the world and Varian machines are carrying out more stereotactic radiosurgery and stereotactic body radiotherapy treatments than those of any other manufacturer," he added.

"At many centers RapidArc has become the standard technique for SBRT treatments in lung, pancreatic, liver, kidney and other indications. TrueBeam STx with its high definition HD120™ MLC (multileaf collimator) allows the utilization of RapidArc with great precision."

Varian's TrueBeam system has been designed from the ground up to treat tumors with unprecedented speed and accuracy -- including tumors that move during treatment as the patient breathes in and out. Designed to advance the treatment of lung, liver, head and neck, and other types of cancer, TrueBeam features a multitude of technical innovations that dynamically synchronize imaging, patient positioning, motion management, and treatment delivery. With its High Intensity Mode, TrueBeam can deliver very high doses quickly and accurately, more than twice as fast as earlier generations of technology.  This unique capability is of particular importance for radiosurgical applications, where very large doses are delivered in a single treatment or only a few sessions.

TrueBeam™ STx with Novalis® Radiosurgery program is a joint offering from Varian and Brainlab, optimized for radiosurgery.  In addition to imaging and treatment technology from Varian, this system incorporates additional imaging and patient positioning technologies from Brainlab, for additional efficiency, precision, and flexibility.

Varian is sponsoring an ISRS Emerging Technologies Symposium on Monday, May 9th. The symposium will be hosted by Professor John Adler, chief of new clinical applications for Varian, who will also present a paper on the company's vision for radiosurgery. Also speaking is Dr. Frank Lagerwaard, radiation oncologist at VU University Medical Centre in Amsterdam, Netherlands, who will detail the hospital's active radiosurgery program using Varian equipment, and Dr. Michael Schulder, Professor of Neurosurgery at Hofstra University School of Medicine and Director of the Brain Tumor Institute in Manhasset, NY.  Dr. Schulder will focus on the evolution of functional treatments from Functional Neurosurgery to Functional Radiosurgery.

With approximately 500 pre-registrants consisting of 35% neurosurgeons, 35% radiation oncologists and 30% other clinical and technical specialists in the field, this year's Paris ISRS meeting is likely to be the largest international gathering of the growing SRS/SBRT clinical specialty to date.  More information about the ISRS can be found at www.isrsy.org.
