University Health System-San Antonio Boosts Patient Safety: Upgrades Patient Monitoring to Innovative Pulse Oximetry Technology
Date:9/10/2013

SAN ANTONIO, Sept. 10, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- University Health System (UHS) announced today that it will strengthen patient safety measures at the medical center and in its ongoing effort to remain in the vanguard of patient safety it is converting to Nellcor™ pulse oximetry technology from Covidien.  Oximetry non-invasively and continuously monitors the oxygen level of a patient's blood, alerting clinicians should a patient's oxygen status become compromised.

Nellcor™ pulse oximetry technology can effectively monitor a wider range of patients even when signal interference is present. Covidien is the first company to receive FDA clearance for a motion-tolerant bedside pulse oximeter that is also compliant with ISO 80601-2-61 (International Organization for Standardization standards for pulse oximetry). Pulse oximeters provide early warning of dangerous respiratory complications, enabling clinicians to detect and address life-threatening events sooner and they provide consistent performance during various challenging conditions, such as patient motion, noise and low perfusion, which can impede the assessment of patient respiratory status.

Motion-tolerant pulse oximetry is critical for ensuring patient safety because patient movement can thwart accurate readings and delay diagnosis of serious respiratory compromise.

Use of this pulse oximetry technology from Covidien is part of UHS's $899.4 million Capital Improvement Program which includes a new 1 million square-foot hospital tower at its University Hospital campus in the South Texas Medical Center, as well as a 269-thousand square foot outpatient center on its Robert B. Green Campus downtown. The Capital Improvement Program is the largest construction project in Bexar County history and will redefine healthcare delivery for the local community and trauma region.

"It is a privilege to partner with institutions that are as forward looking and as committed to quality and patient safety as University Health System-San Antonio. Together we are working to provide monitoring solutions that benefit patients and their families," said Matthew Anderson, Vice President and General Manager, Respiratory and Monitoring Solutions, Covidien.
