LARGO, Fla., Jan. 29, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Bacteriostatic water is a sterile water solution used for injection purposes. The difference between Bacteriostatic water and sterile water is that bacteriostatic water contains .09% benzyl alcohol added as a bacteriostatic preservative and sterile water does not.

The bacteriostatic preservative prevents the growth or reproducing of bacteria within the vial.

According to the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP) the shortage is due to a combination of manufacturing issues as well as an increase in demand of the product.

Supply is estimated to begin to meet demand sometime in February when the manufacturing issues and supply chain is able to catch up to the demand.
