US B12 Shots Discusses B12 Deficiency Link to Depression

TAMPA, Fla., March 20, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The MRC Neuropsychiatric Research Laboratory in Epsom, Surrey, UK found an association suggesting that those low in folate and vitamin b12 are linked to depression symptoms.

Depression facts

Studies estimate that nearly 18 million Americans suffer from depression, of those 9 million are said to have clinical depression. Two thirds of all depression sufferers do not seek the necessary treatment. Several lifestyle behaviors also coincide with depression such as alcoholism, smoking, obesity and sleeping disorder. Depression is listed as the 8th leading cause of death in the United States.

The CDC ( Center for Disease Control) found the following groups to be more likely to meet criteria for major depression:

  • People between the ages of 45-64
  • Blacks, Hispanics, non-Hispanic persons of other races or multiple races
  • Women
  • This with less than a high school education
  • Those previously married
  • Individuals unable to work or unemployed
  • Persons without health insurance coverage

According to the study those that have a healthy amount of vitamin b12 not only are at less risk for depression but they have a greater response to treatment if they are depressed.
