U.S. Enterprise Medical Image Archiving Market

NEW YORK, March 27, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- announces that a new market research report is available in its catalogue:

U.S. Enterprise Medical Image Archiving Market

This research service analyzes the U.S. market for enterprise medical image archiving focusing on its two main product segments: enterprise picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) archives and vendor-neutral archives. The study begins with an evaluation of the number of annual imaging procedures in the United States being sent to digital image archives, the corresponding image data volumes required for primary and secondary storage of these image data, and the factors driving and restraining growth. The study then presents a global picture of medical imaging IT middleware technology and the competitive landscape. Furthermore, it presents revenue, unit, installed base, and market penetration forecasts for both segments to 2018.

Executive Summary

•During the last few years the traditional deployment model for picture archiving and communication systems (PACS) based on dedicated single-department image archives has shown its limitations at provider sites.•Transitioning to a new PACS vendor has often forced imaging providers to undertake a complex and expensive data migration effort, due to the lack of access to raw data caused by the use of proprietary mechanisms in most of the legacy PACS systems.•Providers no longer view it as a sustainable approach to continue expanding monolithic and disparate image archives for each imaging department, while storage volume requirements of the diversifying imaging enterprise continue to increase exponentially.•In this context, IT departments have considerably increased their influence over decision making for imaging IT. While radiology remains the major contributor to any enterprise imaging IT strategy, most approaches now have a broader scope than Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) images from radiology alone.•The new technology paradigm that has been emerging in recent years is based on centralized archiving on the back end, combined with distributed viewing using enterprise viewers on the front end.•Providers are primarily taking one of two approaches to implement such an enterprise-oriented strategy. One approach relies on PACS-neutral archives from third-party vendors, commonly referred to as vendor-neutral archives (VNA), and the other one relies on enterprise PACS archives, mainly provided by incumbent PACS vendors.•Although they have been around for about ten years now, VNAs have only been expanding slowly into the marketplace, as they have been following a gradual top-down expansion starting from large-scale organizations and select early adopters.•As for the development of an enterprise PACS archive involving (one of) their incumbent PACS vendor(s), they have been limited in time due to the late entry of vendors into this space, and limited in scope due to the fact that they involve primarily highly satisfied PACS customers and one of a select set of commercially available solutions.•As the two approaches make their way into the marketplace, they are creating a sizeable and fast-growing segment of the revenue opportunity for imaging informatics and PACS.
