Traitement du cancer primaire du foie : l'étude SARAH désormais accessible aux patients concernés sur l'ensemble du territoire français

e[2] de survie et de tolérance à long terme de la radioembolisation utilisant les microsphères SIR-Spheres® chez des patients atteints de CHC inopérables, ont montré un intérêt croissant pour la radioembolisation. L'utilisation des microsphères SIR-Spheres pour traiter les tumeurs hépatiques non résécables - c'est-à-dire celles que l'on ne peut enlever par la chirurgie - est approuvée en Australie, dans l'Union Européenne (marquage CE), en Nouvelle-Zélande, en Suisse, en Turquie et dans plusieurs autres pays (Inde, Corée, Singapour, Hong Kong...). Les microsphères SIR-Spheres sont indiquées aux Etats-Unis pour le traitement des tumeurs hépatiques métastatiques non résécables liées à un cancer colorectal primitif en association avec une chimiothérapie intra-artérielle hépatique avec la floxuridine.

A propos du carcinome hépatocellulaire

Le carcinome hépatocellulaire est l'un des 10 cancers les plus fréquents au monde, avec près de 750 000 cas diagnostiqués chaque année, et la 3ème cause de mortalité par cancer.[3] On l'observe chez des personnes dont le foie est gravement atteint ou cirrhotique à la suite d'affections telles que l'hépatite ou l'alcoolisme. Le cancer hépatocellulaire peut être guéri par la chirurgie : soit par résection des parties malades du foie, soit par transplantation du foie d'un donneur sain. Toutefois, ces interventions ne sont pas adaptées à la grande majorité des patients dont la survie est comprise entre quelques mois et 2 ou 3 ans, essentiellement en raison de l'état du foie au moment du diagnostic et de l'étendue de l'envahissement tumoral.
