The SCOOTER Store Donates Scooter to Military Spouse

RIDGECREST, Calif., Feb. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Inyokern resident June Adams once traveled the world with her husband, Jerry; now she struggles with a chronic lung disease. Her condition has limited her mobility to the extent that she is frequently confined to the mobile home she shares with her husband.

Then the Dream Foundation heard about Adams. The foundation is the first national wish-granting organization for adults suffering life-threatening illnesses. Jackie Waddill, Programs & Development for Dream Foundation, contacted The SCOOTER Store to introduce the company to Adams.

On Friday morning, The SCOOTER Store, with the help of the Dream Foundation, provided Adams with a Go-Go Ultra scooter at her home in Inyokern. On hand from The SCOOTER Store's Los Angeles operations were Mobility & Service Specialist Scott Clark and Healthcare Relations Consultants Chuck Rogers and Joe Minney to make the presentation. The scooter was donated under The SCOOTER Store's "Gift of Mobility" program, which provides mobility equipment and assistance to those who do not have the resources or insurance to obtain power wheelchairs and scooters.

"It's often the simple things in life that bring the most joy and comfort in a final wish or dream," said Waddill. "We are so appreciative of The SCOOTER Store's efforts in helping us fulfill June's dream. This scooter doesn't just provide mobility; it allows June independence and the gift of quality time with her husband in the fresh, outdoor air."

The scooter will help Adams regain the freedom and independence she once enjoyed with Jerry, a retired Navy veteran. She can once again go outside with her husband for walks and visit friends in the RV and mobile home park.

"Ms. Adams proudly served her country for years as a military spouse; it is our turn to serve her," said Doug Harrison, Founder, President and CEO of The SCOOTER Store. "We started the Gift of Mobility program because we understand that mobility, and the ensuing independence, is fundamental to the freedom many take for granted. After seeing so many sites with her husband, we hope the scooter can broaden her boundaries beyond the walls of her home."

Harrison and his wife, Susanna, started the Gift of Mobility program in December 2002 to help people like June Adams improve their quality of life by assisting in achieving their independence and mobility. Since then, the outreach program has worked with nonprofit groups around the country to donate power wheelchairs, scooters and manual wheelchairs, valued at more than $350,000 a year to individuals and community service organizations, enabling them to provide freedom and independence to people with limited mobility.
