The Financial and Human Impact of Addiction in the Workplace

ITASCA, Ill., April 6, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- New data show that substance misuse and prescription drug issues are following us into the workplace and the impact is significant. More than 70% of United States employers are feeling the direct impact of prescription drug misuse in the workplaces, according to a survey released by National Safety Council. 

To help employers understand the true costs of substance use in their workplaces, the National Safety Council, Shatterproof and NORC at the University of Chicago developed a first-of-its-kind Substance Use Cost Calculator to give employers a snapshot of the human and financial toll drug use has on workplaces.

Employers input basic statistics about their workforce, such as industry, location and number of employees. They receive results that show estimated prevalence of substance use disorders among employees and dependents, associated costs and potential savings if employees and their family members treat substance use disorders.

Developed through scientific analysis, the Substance Use Cost Calculator provides the individual costs of alcohol, prescription pain medication, marijuana and illicit drug use, and is broken down by industry and number of employees.
