Tennessee Stop-Sale System Achieves Significant Results In Battle Against Meth
Date:7/9/2012

LUTHERVILLE, Md., July 9, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI) – a nonprofit organization that facilitates cooperation between law enforcement, healthcare professionals, state regulatory agencies and pharmaceutical manufacturers in the prevention and investigation of drug diversion – today lauded the latest results achieved by the real-time, stop-sale system in Tennessee.  Data for the first six months of 2012 released by the National Precursor Log Exchange (NPLEx) shows electronic technology in the Volunteer State blocked the sale of more than 26,000 boxes of medicine containing pseudoephedrine (PSE) preventing more than 71,000 grams from potentially being diverted by meth criminals.  NPLEx was fully implemented in Tennessee in January 2012.

In addition to NPLEx, Tennessee also has a meth offender registry that contains the names of 3,090 individuals who, due to previous meth-related offenses, are not allowed to buy PSE.  Since January 2012, NPLEx has blocked over 278 meth offenders attempting to buy 746 boxes of PSE-containing medicines.

"In just six short months since Tennessee's real-time, stop-sale technology became fully operational, the system has blocked thousands of illegal purchases and provided narcotics professionals with valuable information which has led directly to arrests," said Charles F. Cichon, executive director of the National Association of Drug Diversion Investigators (NADDI).  "The success of NPLEx in combatting meth means that responsible Tennesseans will continue to have access to the safe and effective cold and allergy medicines they depend on for relief from cold and allergy symptoms.  Moving forward, it's important for Tennessee leaders to give NPLEx time to continue to work."
