Tampa Pharmacist Receives Specialty Pharmacy Certification Credential from SPCB
Date:12/3/2013

ALEXANDRIA, Va., Dec. 3, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The Specialty Pharmacy Certification Board (SPCB) is pleased to announce the recent certification of Michael J. Crocco, PharmD, RPh, CSP under its Certified Specialty Pharmacist™ (CSP™) certification program. Created to serve as an objective tool for identifying competent professionals within the Specialty Pharmacy industry, SPCB developed the CSP certification to provide independent, verifiable evidence of proficiency in practice.

Notably, Dr. Crocco helped develop the CSP credential as a subject matter expert, collaborating with a distinguished panel of top performing clinical pharmacists representing specialty thought leaders within the industry. Their collaborative efforts writing, reviewing and reconfiguring submitted questions completed the framework of SPCB's examination. He has now become one of the first in the industry to earn this important distinction.

Dr. Crocco currently serves as a Pharmacist in Charge (PIC) for Publix Pharmacy in Tampa, Fl. He is also a Specialty Pharmacy Clinical Consultant for the National Association of Specialty Pharmacy (NASP). Previously, he worked as a clinical pharmacist for Wellcare Specialty Pharmacy and has been involved with the Specialty Pharma Education Center as a reviewer and author of Continuing Education for Pharmacists and Nurses. Dr. Crocco graduated from the University of Florida College of Pharmacy in 2008.

"We congratulate Dr. Crocco for demonstrating his commitment and skill by earning CSP certification," said Gary M. Cohen, BSPharm, RPh, CSP, SPCB executive director. "SPCB congratulates all of the exam development participants, especially Dr. Crocco, for his contributions in developing this credential. We look forward to seeing where earning certification takes these truly accomplished specialty pharmacists."

The CSP credential is a key indicator to employers, manufacturers, payers, other healthcare providers, and the public at large that a professional is an expert in specialty pharmaceuticals. Earning CSP certification validates specialty pharmacy experience, demonstrates a commitment to patient safety, and sets a new standard for pharmacies to elevate their specialty pharmacy services. Applications for the CSP exam are available at www.spcboard.org. Exams are administered in April and October yearly.

SPCB, launched in 2012, is an independent, not-for-profit entity whose sole mission is the certification of professionals who meet specific eligibility requirements and pass a rigorous assessment instrument. The SPCB is independent from any trade or professional association. The SPCB is dedicated to promoting specialty pharmacy's unique responsibility, maintaining the highest quality standards, and advocating for professional development to ensure that specialty patients receive appropriate care now and in the future. The goal of the CSP program is to assure the general public receives care from qualified, educated, and knowledgeable specialty pharmacists.
