Surgeons Develop Innovative Life-Saving Treatments to Correct Massive Bleeding in Trauma Patients
Date:10/9/2007

Patients on the protocol needed 10.5 units of plasma, while those who were not on the protocol needed 16.1 units. Patients on the protocol used 3.0 units of platelets; those not on the protocol used 7.6 units.

"The big difference with TEP is you have predefined packets of blood products with larger amounts of clotting factors and platelets that the patient needs and they are ready in advance, so the surgeons don't have to worry about transfusions during a major trauma case," medical student Au concluded.

Oliver Gunter, MD, James Isbell, MD, and Bryan Cotton, MD, participated in the Vanderbilt University study of TEP.

Zheng Chen, MD, PhD; Christian Shults, MD; Elizabeth Sailhamer, MD; Peter Rhee, MD, FACS; Konstantinos Spaniolas, MD; George Velmahos, MD, FACS; and Marc de Moya, MD, participated in the Massachusetts General study of hypothermia.
