Specialty Practices Find Smoother Path to EHR Adoption and Meaningful Use Certification with Digital Writing Technology from Anoto

WESTBOROUGH, Mass., March 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Anoto, the world leader in digital writing technology, today announced that its solutions are being increasingly adopted by specialty practices as a result of its ease of use and streamlined approach in the transition to electronic health records (EHR).

It is critical for specialty physicians adopting EHR technologies to have as little disruption in day to day activities as possible. However, each specialty – whether it's Rheumatology, Radiology, Ophthalmology or any others – has its own unique needs specific to that type of practice which can result in a slower transition process.

Under the current Stage 1 Meaningful Use regulations, eligible professionals must use computerized physician order entry (CPOE) (also referred to as computerized provider order entry) for 30 percent of their patients. Without doing so, the physician will not qualify for the incentive payments. Digital writing technology provides a way for specialty practices to continue to work the way they always have, using forms customized for their particular specialty. Anoto's technology turns the forms into a live digital document that is immediately available electronically, streamlining the transition to electronic records.

Anoto works with partners around the world who are experts in healthcare to deploy digital writing solutions that capture structured EHR data directly from pen and paper. Some of the key partners onsite with Anoto at HIMSS 2013 include:

  • Shareable Ink – Booth 3568
Shareable Ink is capturing clinically-rich documentation and transforming it to structured data and analytics. Visit Shareable Ink at HIMSS for an interactive demo of our applications that automate areas where electronic documentation has traditionally been challenging – from anesthesia to patient-generated history to ambulatory sites. Our solutions will also be showcased in the Allscripts (#3441), Greenway (#3941) and T-System (#2219) booths. For everyone who mentions 'LIBERATE' at our booth, we'll be making a donation to Rebuilding Together New Orleans, one of our favorite NOLA charities.
  • NextGen Healthcare – Booth 5315, 149, Interoperability Showcase
NextGen Healthcare is a leading provider of integrated electronic health record (EHR) and practice management systems, connectivity solutions, and billing services designed to serve the needs of ambulatory practices, hospitals, and other healthcare providers. Our award-winning, certified solutions take the lead in improving the quality of patient care and increasing operational efficiencies—while delivering a healthy return on investment.
  • eClinicalWorks – Booth 8431, Interoperability Showcase
eClinicalWorks delivers ambulatory clinical solutions for providers and communities, including EMR/PM software, patient portals, ACO/PCMH services, revenue cycle management and community health records. With more than 220,000 providers and 410,000 healthcare professionals across all 50 states using its solutions, customers include physician practices, out-patient departments of hospitals, health centers, departments of health and convenient care clinics.

Digital writing technology's mobility, ease of use and instantaneous data access has resulted in increased deployments by many specialty practices. Examples of partners working with specialty practices include:

Shareable Ink:

  • The Center for Orthopedics (Sheffield Village, OH) is a busy six physician orthopedic practice with three clinic locations and providing surgical care at four hospitals. While small compared to some orthopedic groups, their patient volumes are over the 90th percentile.

The use of Shareable Ink allows the easy capture of discrete data directly in the EHR through patient rather than staff data entry – reducing the number of FTEs needed at patient check-in.  Comprehensive medical history information, including many Meaningful Use data elements, are captured by patients in the waiting room and populate the EHR visit note automatically.

NextPen® solution with NextGen Healthcare:

  • Arthritis Associates – (South Florida) specializes in adult and pediatric rheumatology. They treat all types of arthritis and autoimmune disorders through nonsurgical means.

The use of digital pen technology allows the practice to immediately bring relevant data directly into their EHR system. This has resulted in improved efficiency – especially for new patients. The solution also helps to achieve meaningful use standards since the forms contain details such as smoking history, race and demographic information.
  • Pacific Cataract and Laser Institute – (17 locations in Alaska, Idaho, Montana, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington) specializes in cataract surgery and laser vision correction. As a referral center, most of the people they treat are first-time patients. With cataracts being an age-related condition, a large proportion of patients treated are over the age of 65.

They turned to digital pen and paper technology, since it required minimal training for staff and virtually no change in the current process being used by patients to fill out registration forms. The solution interprets the handwriting with high accuracy and provides the added benefit of verifying health history information quickly.
  • Metro Imaging – (five locations in the greater St. Louis area, with offices in South County, West County, North County, St. Peters and Richmond Heights) is a non-claustrophobic MRI, computed tomography, ultrasonography, digital mammography, bone density, fluoroscopy and digital radiography practice. The organization conducts upwards of 100,000 exams per year and uses more than 1,000 new patient forms per day for both health history and consent.

By leveraging a digital writing solution, Metro Imaging can immediately import relevant structured data directly into their NextGen® Ambulatory EHR, resulting in increased practice efficiency and improved flexibility to handle high patient volumes and expedited administrative tasks that ultimately deliver better patient care.

How it Works
The digital pen has a tiny camera in the tip. The camera interprets the pen's position on the patient forms by reading a faint dot pattern added to the page when printed. Each pattern is unique to that specific sheet of paper, ensuring that all data goes to the correct patient record. The solution requires no special printer or paper; you can print from your own printer, using normal office paper. Once the information is captured, users then simply place the pen in a USB docking station, or use its Bluetooth capability to review and approve the data. A perfect image of the form is also captured and can automatically be attached to the record, making it ideal for signatures and drawings.
