Sigma Honored by the American Journal of Nursing with two Book of the Year Awards
Date:1/14/2019

Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing (Sigma) was awarded two 2018 American Journal of Nursing (AJN) Book of the Year Awards. These awards are regarded as one of the most important and prestigious designations of excellence in nursing book publishing. Now in its 49th year, the AJN Book of the Year competition has recognized Sigma for the last 10 consecutive years.

Following are the Sigma books recognized by AJN:

-Evidence-Based Practice in Action: Comprehensive Strategies, Tools, and Tips from the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics was awarded second place in the Nursing Education/Continuing Education/Professional Development category. Authored by Laura Cullen, Kirsten Hanrahan, Michele Farrington, Jennifer DeBerg, Sharon Tucker, and Charmaine Kleiber.

Evidence-Based Practice in Action is a unique, application-oriented evidence-based practice (EBP) resource of the latest Iowa Model Revised: Evidence-Based Practice to Promote Excellence in Health Care. This book offers a detailed plan to guide nurses and healthcare leaders in promoting EBP adoption and implementation.

AJN judge Donna M. Nickitas, PhD, RN, NEA-BC, CNE, FNAP, FAAN, notes: "No matter how much knowledge the reader has about evidence-based practice, this book provides a comprehensive approach to tackling any clinical issue, problem, or project."

-Hospice & Palliative Care Handbook, Third Edition was awarded second place in the Palliative Care and Hospice category. Authored by Tina M. Marrelli.

The third edition of this popular book offers concise, focused coverage of all aspects of hospice and palliative care for clinicians, managers, and other team members who provide important care while meeting difficult multilevel regulations. Filled with key topics such as professional standards and guidelines, bereavement services considerations, and more, this comprehensive book provides the tools hospice caregivers need for success.

“This book would be ideal for the whole hospice team to read to help them understand their roles and become familiar with issues of quality and guidelines for care," writes AJN judge Gracelyn Spears, MSN, FNP-BC.

“The American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Awards recognize some of the best books in nursing publishing, and Sigma is pleased to have two new recipients for 2018,” said Sigma Publisher Dustin Sullivan. “These two awards raise the total for Sigma Publishing to 39 AJN Book of the Year Awards. I am proud of our authors and editorial team for maintaining such high publishing standards year after year, which in the end, benefits Sigma members and nurses everywhere.”
