Shape Memory Therapeutics Hires Industry Veteran Ted Ruppel as CEO

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, Oct. 27, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Shape Memory Therapeutics (SMT) announced today the hiring of medical device industry veteran Ted Ruppel as President & CEO.

Ted Ruppel brings more than 25 years of entrepreneurial and medical device company management experience, including the IPO of Micrus Endovascular Corp.  Formerly EVP/CFO of Vascular Dynamics and the former Senior VP of R&D and Operations at Micrus Endovascular Corporation (acquired by J&J), and previous management/operations roles at CBYON Inc., Biometric Imaging (acquired by BD), Applied Biosystems, and Spectra-Physics Lasers, Ted has a BSME from the University of Rochester and MBA (TRIUM – Jointly conferred by London School of Economics and Political Science, NYU Stern School of Business, and HEC Paris).

"I am pleased with the selection of Ted as our new CEO," said Chairman Duncan Maitland. "Ted brings valuable experience as a leader in previous global medical device corporations. His strong track record and personal value system make him an ideal choice to lead SMT on our final steps towards commercial product launch. In addition, on behalf of all of us at SMT, I would like to thank former CEO James Lancaster for his contributions and who will stay with SMT as Chief Financial Officer."

Commenting on his new position, Ruppel said, "After working closely with the Shape Memory team, I am delighted and honored to join such a talented and passionate group of researchers and engineers. Over the next several years, our goal is to accelerate a number of important products into the marketplace based on the well-patented shape memory polymer technology developed by Texas A&M University and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratories. Our focus will be to supply physicians with more effective vascular occlusion products, so they can quickly and efficiently treat their patients."

Maitland said he considers Ruppel's experience a tremendous asset to SMT with his deep operational experiences across a variety of companies in the vascular industry and with experience across many stages of product development and launch, especially in the neurovascular space.

"The Board pursued a rigorous selection process seeking out top executives with experience in the vascular medical device marketplace. Ted brings a unique combination of product development, manufacturing operations and business acumen," commented former CEO and now CFO James Lancaster. "I am glad the Board has chosen a thought leader who has demonstrated broad success in the medical device arena. I wish him all the best."

"We currently have a strong R&D organization in place with strong innovation and product development competencies as well as other executives and strategic partnerships in place scaling our manufacturing efforts," Ruppel said. "Together we will develop and launch great products into the marketplace."
