Samplify Systems Next-Generation Prism 3.0 Real-Time Compression IP Named Finalist in EDN Magazine's 20th Annual Innovation Awards
Date:2/22/2010

SANTA CLARA, Calif., Feb. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Samplify Systems, Inc., a provider of mixed-signal compression solutions for intelligent data conversion, today announced its Prism 3.0 real-time compression IP has been selected as a finalist in EDN magazine's 20th annual Innovation Awards competition in the publication's Embedded-System Technologies category.  The prestigious Innovation Awards honor the best people, products and technologies that have shaped the semiconductor industry over the past year.  Moreover, Samplify's SAM1600 Family of ADCs was a winner of EDN's 19th annual Innovation Award in the ADC and DAC category last year. Now through March 19, EDN's worldwide readership can cast their ballots online to vote winners from among the Innovation Awards finalists by going to

"We received an impressive number of submissions for our 2009 Innovation Awards program, indicating that innovation was alive and well despite the economically challenging year," said Rick Nelson, EDN editor-in-chief. "In the Embedded-Systems Technology category, Samplify's Prism 3.0 IP was one of the outstanding submissions our editors chose. And now, it's up to the readers to determine which product in each category they find most compelling."

According to Tom Sparkman, CEO of Samplify, "We are once again proud and honored to have been selected by EDN editors as a finalist in this very prestigious award.  Last year, as a startup, we were excited to have won this coveted industry award for our first silicon product, the SAM1600 Family.  This year's recognition, however, underscores the core innovation that Samplify delivers to designers: Prism IP — a very distinctive real-time compression algorithm."

The Innovation of the Year Awards recognizes unique, state-of-the-art electronics products in several categories. Prism 3.0 is a finalist in the Embedded-System Technologies category.  Samplify Systems' next generation Prism 3.0 IP delivers higher signal quality, and lower latency for optimum data transmission in next-generation wireless and medical imaging applications.  Implemented on popular FPGA platforms and the company's intelligent data converters, Prism 3.0 has numerous enhancements specifically for wireless base station, computed tomography (CT), and medical ultrasound applications.

Prism 3.0 dramatically reduces decompression complexity without sacrificing compression ratios.  The Prism 3.0 engine nearly halves the use of FPGA logic resources. Additionally, its encoding format has been optimized for software decoding offering a 200 percent improvement in decompression performance on x86-based CPUs or graphics processing units (GPU).  With 3x the decompression performance on the back-end processor, Prism 3.0 eliminates backplane bottlenecks between the data acquisition hardware and the software-processing domain.

Latency is a critical measure in real-time signal processing. With a new flow-through pipelined design, latency through compression and decompression is reduced to less than 1 microsecond and is independent of packet size to meet the requirements of wireless repeater and 4G wireless base station applications such as LTE (Long-Term Evolution).

With Prism 3.0, designers can perform tradeoffs to determine acceptable ratios of compression, from lossless to lossy, to suite to their particular application. Benefits include lower pin counts, reduced board area, smaller and cheaper memories, and narrower and less expensive busses and networks, including those using the fastest and most expensive SerDes transceivers.
