Returning Life to Normal for Those with Painful Diabetic Neuropathy
Date:1/8/2014

WALTHAM, Mass., Jan. 8, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Living with diabetes can be tough any way one slices it. In addition to the challenges of managing one's diet and blood sugar levels, patients can experience shooting, stabbing or burning pains in their hands or feet unexpectedly and for no apparent reason.

This condition is called painful diabetic neuropathy (PDN), and many with the condition are forced to deal with it on a daily basis. Imagine waking up in the middle of the night because one's hands, feet or other extremities feel like they're on fire. Imagine not being able to hold a coffee cup or manipulate a pen. What must it be like to have to severely curtail one's physical activities? Such bleak scenarios are common among PDN patents. In addition to the pain, many with PDN also have damaged sensory nerves that can make them unaware of foot injuries as well as taking an enormous psychological toll on them and their loved ones.

Thanks to a Waltham, MA-based company named NeuroMetrix, Inc., it's possible for PDN patients to perform most physical activities while receiving treatment. NeuroMetrix has created the SENSUS™ Pain Management System, an innovative new device that can be worn right under clothing.

Lightweight, discreet and wrapping directly around the patient's calves, SENSUS's easy, one-button control makes it an ideal treatment for PDN patients of any age. It is non-addictive and non-narcotic, yet powerful enough to provide fast, long-lasting pain relief, even during sleep: SENSUS is the first transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulator cleared by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to be used while sleeping. The device immediately shuts off if it becomes dislodged for any reason.

As Shai N. Gozani, M.D., Ph.D., President and CEO of NeuroMetrix, explains, "One of the most ironic 'Catch 22s' of diabetes is how the need for exercise and other regular physical movement can be rendered virtually impossible when one is also dealing with PDN. We provide PDN patients with a device that can help them go about living their lives with relative normalcy."
