RAD Technology Medical Systems Delivers Innovative Time Saving Modular Construction At New Swedish Cancer Institute Facility

EDMONDS, Wash. and AVENTURA, Fla., May 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The residents of Edmonds and Snohomish County, Washington now have access to state-of-the-art hospital based medical oncology cancer care right in their own backyard thanks to the groundbreaking modular building techniques of RAD Technology Medical Systems and the ongoing commitment by Swedish Health Services to expand their cancer treatment offerings.

RAD Technology Medical Systems, a leader in the modular design-build industry, was selected by Swedish Health Services to engineer and construct their new outpatient medical oncology facility in Edmonds, just north of Seattle. The 17,102 square foot center constructed by RAD Technology is the latest addition to The Swedish Cancer Institute's family of community-based cancer treatment centers.

RAD Technology's pioneering approach to modular healthcare construction meant that the new Swedish Cancer Institute at Edmonds went from factory to a fully-functional facility ready for patients in a mere 14 weeks.

Custom built off-site, RAD Technology's cutting-edge modular units are delivered directly to the site ready to be assembled. This unique approach allows for a fast and efficient on-site assembly, cutting down on the time of a traditional building project. It also allows for site development and building construction to occur simultaneously.

By choosing RAD Technology, Swedish Health Systems was able to give patients access to the new facility several months sooner than if conventional construction methods were used.

"The combination of a design-build approach and RAD's expertise in modular healthcare construction provided a streamlined and efficient project delivery," explained John Lefkus , Principal Partner and President of RAD Technology.

For the Swedish Cancer Institute at Edmonds, RAD Technology collaborated with internationally renowned architectural firm Perkins + Will on the design and program phase of the project. The design focused on creating a calming patient-centered space with large windows to optimize access to daylight. RAD Technology took on the challenge making the designs from Perkins + Will a functional reality using factory fabricated modular units. Not only does this method provide a substantial time savings over traditional construction, it also allows for seamless expansion to accommodate the Swedish Cancer Institute's future needs.

"The number of people turning to Swedish/Edmonds for their cancer treatment has grown over the last decade," said Richard McGee , M.D., one of five Swedish Cancer Institute medical oncologists who will practice at the new center. "This new facility constructed by RAD Technology will allow us to offer enhanced care to a growing population."

Previously, RAD Technology provided design-build services for the Radiotherapy Center at Ballard, Washington, another one of The Swedish Cancer Institute's community care facilities. There, RAD Technology used their patented modular radiotherapy treatment vault to house the Seattle area's first TomoTherapy Hi-Art radiation treatment system.

"Accelerated patient services and reduced site disruption are both key drivers for organizations selecting RAD," Lefkus added. "Swedish Cancer Institute was already familiar with RAD's patented radiotherapy technology from the project at Ballard Hospital two years ago."

Now, with the ability to serve over 175 chemotherapy patients a day at the new facility, patients have access to hospital-quality care without having to worry about commuting far from their homes.

"Providing excellent care starts with improving access," said Thomas D. Brown , M.D., MBA, executive director of Swedish Cancer Institute. "New centers such as this one at Swedish/Edmonds will help ensure patients in our communities have continued convenient access to the highest quality cancer care available."

The new center is part of a $60 million dollar campaign to revamp and expand the former Stevens Hospital campus, which Swedish took over in September 2010. In addition to 19 chemotherapy infusion suites, The Swedish Cancer Institute at Edmonds will also offer counseling, patient education, and financial services.

RAD Technology is committed to helping health care organizations provide the most advanced treatment options to their patients, without the delay of traditional construction projects. RAD also provides unique leasing options to assist institutions in avoiding capital constraints while advancing projects.
