Public Art to Complete Transformation of Key Gateway into Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS, Dec. 14 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Travelers of Interstate 70 west of Indianapolis will notice the Holt Road interchange has become a bit more colorful when 10 multicolored art forms are installed on December 15. The art, which is named going home, will eventually include 34 total pieces and was designed by Kathryn Armstrong, a graduate student at Herron School of Art and Design, through the Basile Center for Art, Design and Public Life.

Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) and Keep Indianapolis Beautiful, Inc. (KIB) partnered with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) to seek approval from the Federal Highway Department to install the art. The public art installation at I-70 and Holt Road will be the first of its kind in Indiana, and reflects a growing trend nationally.

The public art installation, which will happen in phases over the next couple of months, marks the completion of a massive landscape makeover at the I-70/Holt Road Exit, which began last May. Nearly 1,500 Lilly employee volunteers planted more than 16,000 plants and 150 trees as part of Lilly's Global Day of Service, one of the world's largest-ever corporate volunteerism events to take place on a single day.

KIB President David Forsell said improving the I-70 corridor from the airport to downtown has been an aspiration of many community leaders for a long time. "It's important that the major corridor into our city reinforces a positive image of our community," he said.

Armstrong specifically designed the 34 colored forms, 10 large and 24 small, to naturally interact with the green space on both the east and west sections of the Holt Road interchange.
