Professional Therapy Associates Study Supports Findings: Physical Therapy Beneficial in Treating Office Workers with Lower Back Pain
Date:3/25/2013

KALISPELL, Mont., March 25, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Over 31 million Americans experience lower back pain at any given time (1).  Montana physical therapy clinic, Professional Therapy Associates (PTA), specializes in diagnosing and treating lower back pain.  Physical therapists at the clinic recently treated a patient suffering from lower back pain and effectively eliminated his discomfort.

Problem:  Michael, a 63-year-old male business executive, was suffering from pain in the lower back.  Michael has worked a desk job for most of his adult life.

●   Back pain is a common complaint among office workers who spend multiple hours each week sitting at a desk.  Many people do not practice proper posture in the office, which can lead to back pain and repetitive stress injuries (2).

Michael's posture and excess weight have taken a serious toll on his spine, resulting in lower back pain.  The pain intensity steadily increased to the point where he needed to adjust his body every thirty minutes or the pain would become too difficult to bear.  He had had physical therapy with PTA a year ago and had experienced tremendous relief, but had stopped doing his home exercises.  The pain returned, and he started feeling numbness in his left extremities and occasionally on the right.

Diagnosis:  An examination by PTA therapists revealed that Michael suffered from severe lower back pain and nerve root strain down his left leg.  His lower back pain increased with forward motion and resulted in pain while sitting, twisting and lifting.  Michael could not sit, stand or walk for 30 minutes without having to switch activities due to pain.

Treatment Plan:  PTA therapists devised an individualized plan to remedy Michael's pain, which included manual therapy and therapeutic exercises such as leg presses, lunges and pull-ups.  Michael was seen for 31 visits over a 4½-month period at three times per week initially, which was then decreased to two times per week.  PTA therapists also educated Michael on self-care for flare-ups of symptoms and maintenance of current strength gains.

Result:  Michael experienced major improvement in low back stiffness, with a 90% reduction in back pain.  The pain down his left thigh has resolved, and he is now able to engage in strenuous activity without any of his previous symptoms.

Upon completion of his therapy, Michael commented, "I entered [Professional Therapy Associates] with severe lower back pain, and after treatment, my body is much stronger.  PTA helped me achieve pain-free mobility without the use of pain medication."

Blaine Stimac , owner and CEO of Professional Therapy Associates, states that his team of physical therapists is dedicated to helping patients achieve their long-term goals via therapy.

"The focus of PTA therapists is helping patients live a normal, pain-free life and providing long-term results," Stimac commented.

As a service to Flathead Valley residents, Professional Therapy Associates is offering free pain relief consultations to anyone suffering from chronic or acute pain, muscle weakness, joint stiffness or other related complaints.  A licensed physical therapist will perform a brief musculoskeletal screening and answer questions about injuries, symptoms and physical therapy treatment.  Individuals who are interested in scheduling a free health and injury screening can call the clinic at one of its four locations.
