Postscript to Sunday's Falls Prevention Awareness Day: Make Seniors Aware They Can Protect Their Hips If They Fall

BOCA RATON, Fla., Sept. 23, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Iris Onrot knows a lot about falls and their sometimes deadly consequences.  She has studied falls and measured and tested their impact, which has led to her inventing a simple way for the elderly to significantly diminish the chances of sustaining a hip fracture from falling.

"I think it's wonderful that yesterday 47 states recognized Falls Prevention Awareness Day, established by the National Council on Aging (NCOA)," she said.

"Now let's observe 'Falls Protection Day' as seniors need to protect their hips from fractures and there is an unobtrusive hip protection they can wear if they only knew about it," said the inventor of ComfiHips® hip protectors, the first with an ultra-thin, patented technology that absorbs most of the impact from a fall.

While falling is a serious subject, Onrot uses humor to show how the ComfiHips product works and how effective it is:

"We applaud NCOA for educating Americans about the importance of preventing falls, and we wholeheartedly endorse NCOA's recommendations for falls prevention (," said Onrot, CEO of Worldwide Ortho, which manufactures the innovative ComfiHips hip fracture protector.  "Today, we are calling for awareness of how important it is to protect against the damage caused by falls when they do occur.

"Certainly seniors should take proactive steps to prevent falls and stay independent for as long as possible, but the reality is that falls will happen," Onrot continued.  "With estimates that every year one of every three adults over 65 will fall, it's important to be protected to reduce the risk of hip fractures and other serious complications.  We advocate including protection along with prevention."

Onrot developed the conveniently wearable ComfiHips hip protector after she learned one out of four people who fall and break their hips die within the first year.  The result is a comfortable undergarment, which is undetectable when worn under everyday clothing, engineered with patented, rigorously tested technology to lower the incidence of fall-related hip fractures.

The ComfiHips protector is worn day and night by men and women.  The product is so effective that Brookdale Senior Living has endorsed ComfiHips as the only hip protection used in its facilities, and ComfiHips protectors are featured for purchase in the online Brookdale Marketplace (
