Pharma IQ's Laboratory Informatics Whitepaper

LONDON, August 24, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --

Pharma IQ has just published the results of an Industry wide laboratory informatics survey, conducted among 5,000 informatics specialist. The whitepaper was produced in association with PhaseFour Informatics, Institute for Laboratory Automation and Industrial Lab Automation and considers the results of the survey as well as includes  case studies of how big pharma and other industries are moving forward.

75% of laboratory informatics users listed technology investment and implementation as their number one priority between 2012 and 2015. The respondents indicated that the implementation of laboratory informatics systems in pharmaceuticals is mature, as almost 55% of respondents implemented their major piece in the last 7-11 years, with 30% having one in place for 11 years or more. There was a flattening-off over the last 2-7 years, with only 4.2% having implemented an informatics system in the last year.

With regards to the 3 biggest obstacles in the day-to-day experience of laboratory informatics, the top 2 challenges include data mining and a lack of knowledge around the standardisation of regulatory requirements, both 41.7%. Integration with other non-informatics software systems and a lack of industry standards were at 37.5%, whereas data migration into a new system received 25% of total responses.

The whitepaper can be accessed at

The whitepaper was created as a part of the pre-conference research for 11th Annual ELNs & Advanced Laboratory Solutions taking place 25-27 September, 2012 in Milan.

The results helped to shape the agenda and final speaker line-up which features Daniel Domine, Head of Research Informatics, Merck presenting the case study -  A Single ELN Across Biology: From Dream to Reality and Ralph Haffner, Head of Scientific Information Systems from Roche that will lead the session on cross-functional ELNs.

Other important topics expressed by survey respondents and will be discussed at the event include:

  • Laboratory data standards and system interoperability: essential for the pharmaceutical business model of the future with insights and experiences from Gerhard Noelken, Director of Informatics, Pfizer
  • Managing and accessing the data more effectively with system design tips (case study from the Genome Analysis Centre)
  • A Global ELN and LES implementation for recipe-based execution in pharmaceutical development (case study from Johnson & Johnson)
