PAINWeekEnd in Atlanta, Georgia, Offers CE/CME Education to Aid the Opioid Abuse Public Health Crisis
Date:3/12/2019

PAINWeekEnd on April 6 and 7 at the Sheraton Atlanta Downtown, 165 Courtland Street NE, Atlanta, Georgia, will be a timely 2-day program providing busy clinicians and allied healthcare practitioners with 12.0 hours of relevant, practical instruction in the management of chronic pain.

All physicians in Georgia who have an active DEA certificate and who prescribe controlled substances are now required to complete 3 hours of CME courses that are designed to specifically address controlled substance prescribing, including: controlled substances prescribing guidelines; recognizing the signs of abuse or misuse of controlled substances; and controlled substances prescribing for chronic pain management. At PAINWeekEnd Atlanta, David Cosio, PhD, ABPP, will explore how new CDC guidelines require providers to assess for risk of overdose or development of a substance use disorder and to be keenly aware of their patients’ pain levels and pain management strategies when working as part of a system where opioid medications may be prescribed. Commenting on his course Falling Down the Rabbit Hole: A Primer for Chronic Pain Management and Substance Abuse Disorders, Dr. Cosio said, “Given the high level of comorbidity between opioid use disorders and chronic pain, providers’ decisions about how to address treatment with patients who may have or who have been diagnosed with substance use disorders are often complex. In this session, we’ll be exploring how patient and provider education programs and communication interventions may improve outcomes in pain management.” Dr. Cosio will also be presenting The Gentle Art of Saying No: How to Establish Appropriate Boundaries With Chronic Pain Patients.

Other courses to be offered at PAINWeekEnd Atlanta include: Pain Pathways Made Simple; 3's Company: COX-2 Inhibitors, Medicinal Marijuana, and Opioid Prescribing; Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathic Pain: Evaluating Treatment Options; Precise Prescribing: Applying the Science of Pain to Treatment Decisions; Clinical Pearls: Unraveling the Secrets of Imaging Studies; The 411 on Nonprescription Analgesics: When to Hold ‘Em, When to Fold ‘Em; The Dynamics of Managing Acute Postoperative Pain in the Current Opioid Sparing Environment; Year of the Locusts: The CDC Guidelines Impact on Practitioners and Patients; The Right Drug, the Right Patient, the Right Time; and Migraines A-Z. Commercially supported activities—addressing a range of product, disease state, and medical information topics—will also be presented.

For more information about this or other regional conferences, and to register for $199, go to the PAINWeekEnd website. BONUS: PAINWeekEnd registrants may register for the 2019 PAINWeek National Conference, September 3-7, in Las Vegas, for $200 off the regular online published price.
