Det vurderes imidlertid at kun en liten del (under 0,01 prosent) av oksytocin i blodet kommer til hjernen på tvers av blodhjernebarrieren, og oppnår en direkte «nese-til-hjerne»-levering er en spennende mulighet.

Virkningene av tradisjonelle intranasale leveringssprayer for oksytocin på flere psykiatriske sykdommer har blitt undersøkt i flere små kliniske studier (Hollender 2007, Gaustella 2009, Andari 2010). De fleste av disse studiene foreslår fordelaktige virkninger, for det meste på aggresiv og paranoid atferd.

  • I disse studiene har høye doser (40-80IU) vanligvis blitt brukt og representerer en logistisk utfordring pga. væskemengden som kreves for å levere disse dosene og utgjør en risiko for langvarige, negative virkninger forbundet med vann- og elektrolyttubalanse.
