Nuovi dati rivelano il crescente problema dell'osteoporosi in Europa

Ogni anno 43000 persone muoiono in seguito a fratture osteoporotiche; i sistemi sanitari europei non trattano le persone a rischio; i costi aumenteranno drasticamente nel 2025

Due nuovi studi presentati oggi - Osteoporosi nell'Unione Europea e la Scorecard dell'osteoporosi in Europa - descrivono l'epidemiologia ed il peso della malattia, confrontando la gestione di osteoporosi e relative fratture in tutti i 27 Stati membri dell'Unione europea (UE).

Le stime dicono che 22 milioni di donne e 5,5 milioni di uomini nella UE soffrono di osteoporosi, con 3,5 milioni nuove fratture ogni anno. Fratture che hanno conseguenze devastanti, tra cui dolore, disabilità e morte prematura: nel 2010, 43000 uomini e donne sono morti in seguito a fratture osteoporotiche.

I costi per il trattamento delle fratture da osteoporosi sono stimati in 37 miliardi di euro ogni anno. Disuguaglianze nella cura dell'osteoporosi rimangono in tutta Europa: i servizi non sono allineati o non operano in maniera efficiente per ridurre il rischio di fratture dovute all'osteoporosi. Considerando l'aumento del 22% (donne) e il 17% (uomini) nella popolazione di oltre 50 anni entro il 2025, ci sara' un drammatico aumento del numero di fratture osteoporotiche.

Il presidente della Fondazione Internazionale sull'Osteoporosi professor John Kanis , avverte, "il 57% dei soggetti ad alto rischio non viene diagnosticato o trattato. I sistemi sanitari europei sono scarsamente preparati ad affrontare il peso attuale di osteoporosi e l'aumento previsto del numero di pazienti con fratture nei prossimi anni."
