New Research: Home Delivery Boosts Adherence

ST. LOUIS, Nov. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- For medication to be effective, it should be taken exactly as prescribed. And yet, a large portion of the millions of Americans who take maintenance medications – routine medication for chronic conditions – have trouble staying on their therapy. To learn more about newly published research that proves receiving prescription drugs through home delivery boosts medication adherence, read:

This new research, conducted by Express Scripts and published in the American Journal of Managed Care, demonstrates that patients using home delivery to receive medications are 11-19% more likely to be adherent to their therapy than similar patients who receive their medications through retail pharmacies.

The study addresses key methodological challenges to the adherence benefits of home delivery, and in doing so, provides the industry's most conclusive, apples-to-apples comparison of medication adherence rates between retail pharmacies and home delivery pharmacies. Even when controlling for potential differences in patient populations and length of prescription (90-day vs 30-day), home delivery continues to achieve superior adherence rates.
