New Public Health Podcast “Power Tools” Supports State and Territorial Work in Chronic Disease Prevention
Date:8/12/2019

The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) announces the premiere of its new podcast series, Power Tools, which explores how technology and innovation partners can increase the effectiveness of public health programs and practitioners.

Hosted by John Patton, NACDD’s Director of Program Relations, the series dives deep with vetted, private-industry companies — from software developers to media giants — whose products and services act as “tools” that add exponential “power” to the work of public health.

These conversations with NACDD partners address some of the pain-points in public health, from increasing awareness to improving physician referrals to presenting data visually.

Each of the podcasts are approximately 30 minutes long and can be streamed on Soundcloud or downloaded at chronicdisease.org/page/PublicationsLibraryLanding, along with other popular NACDD podcast series such as “Health Yeah!” and “Socially Determined.”

Power Tools Episode Guide:

Power Tools #1 — CBS: Beyond Broadcasting with Mike Kotnaur, Marketing Manager, CBS Chicago, and Matt Naber, Director of National Digital Sales
CBS has a dedicated health division to inform and educate the public. Kotnaur and Naber discuss strategy, advertising, and ways to reach people in public health beyond traditional broadcasting.

Power Tools #2 — Kognito with CEO Ron Goldman
Kognito is a software tool that brings together clinical psychology and gaming technology to help patients and providers navigate difficult conversations. Goldman discusses how many patients often are more comfortable having conversations regarding health with virtual human simulations, and, as a result, are more receptive to feedback and education, which can lead to behavior changes.

Power Tools #3 — Live Stories with CEOs Adnan Mahmud and E.A. Weymuller
Mahmud and Weymuller share how Live Stories helps health departments and other entities bring data to life to tell a story that shows the impact and progress of work. Live Stories integrates data-visualization into textual reports to increase reader engagement and information retention.

Power Tools #4 — Rocket Camp with CEO Rob Cherof
Rocket Camp is an advertising agency that specializes in helping organizations leverage their brands to better communicate their unique value proposition and place in the market. Cherof shares how to fine-tune your message and build trust with your audience.

Power Tools #5 — Open Source Wellness with Co-Founders Dr. Elizabeth Markle and Dr. Ben Emmert-Aronson
Open Source Wellness uses clinical psychology to guide behavior change in people with chronic conditions. Dr. Markle and Dr. Emmert-Aronson discuss the successes of the program, which fosters a community setting for participants to engage in social interaction, exercise, meditation, and share a healthy meal once a week.
