NeurOptics Introduces First Hand-held Variable Light Condition Pupillometer to Optimize Outcomes for Refractive Surgery and Premium Intraocular Lens Candidates
Date:9/7/2011

IRVINE, Calif., Sept. 7, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- NeurOptics, the worldwide leader in pupillometry, today announced the availability of the new VIP™-200 Variable Pupillometer for the measurement of pupil size under varying light conditions to enhance opportunities for successful outcomes for refractive surgery and premium intraocular lens candidates.  Using infrared imaging technology, the VIP™-200 measures the pupil 30 times per second over a two-second period at scotopic, low mesopic and high mesopic light levels and provides the average pupil diameter and standard deviation with accuracy exceeding 0.1 millimeter.  Pupil size measurement during a pre-operative evaluation is crucial for today's refractive surgeons when screening candidates for LASIK, and is particularly helpful for optimizing the premium IOL selection for the patient based upon the patient's stated preferences about the level of vision he or she values most (e.g., distance, intermediate or near), occupation, lifestyle, and frequency of nighttime driving.  Pupil size affects vision with any IOL, but even more so for so-called "pupil-dependent IOLs".  An avid reader, for example, especially one who reads in dim light, would be suited for a different premium lens than a golfer.  The most pertinent information will be obtained by measuring a patient's pupils under varying light conditions which simulate real life conditions a patient may experience in daily life such as darkness, a dimly lit room, and driving at night with streetlights.

The VIP™-200 Variable Pupillometer is a single-button activation, battery operated hand-held device which very accurately measures pupil size with no user calibration required.  This portable device can be taken to the patient and does not require a dedicated space in the clinic. The Pupillometer can instantly measure, record and report average pupil size and standard deviation and the measurement results are displayed on the device's color LCD screen or optional paper printout.  Testing has shown that the NeurOptics® Pupillometer is consistent from unit to unit and from operator to operator.  The key to reproducibility is the use of VIP™ (Vertex Invariant Pupillometry™) technology developed by NeurOptics which compensates for differences in vertex distance among patients which may lead to inaccurate pupil measurements and errors up to 20%.

"The simplicity and versatility of this instrument is tremendous to us, in the sense that in our single clinic we can apply it to our cataract patients, our premium IOL patients, our hyperops undergoing LASIK, as well as our patients seeking monovision,"  said Kerry Assil, MD, Medical Director of Assil Eye Institute and author of more than one hundred textbooks, textbook chapters and articles on refractive and cataract surgery.  "And all of that can be done because of the fact that it's so easy to use and so incredibly accurate."

The VIP™-200 is priced at $3,995 and is available now.  For a limited time, NeurOptics is also offering a trade-in credit of $500 for any pupillometer of any brand, whether functioning or not. Contact NeurOptics at (949) 250-9792 for purchase.
