ALEXANDRIA, Va., Oct. 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA) today announced the appointment of Kathleen Jaeger as Executive Vice President and CEO, heralding her as an ideal choice to build on the association's recent accomplishments and lead it to new heights as an advocate for, and supporter of, independent community pharmacies and the patients they serve.

NCPA President and Arlington, TX pharmacy owner Joseph H. Harmison, PD, made the announcement during his address to NCPA's 112th Annual Convention and Trade Exposition.

"Kathleen brings to NCPA a demonstrated track record of successful advocacy along with a first-hand pharmacy background," Harmison said. "Kathleen's knowledge of the pharmacy industry and proven Washington expertise make her a perfect fit for NCPA."

"Kathleen has the experience, vision and leadership capabilities to take this well-positioned association and guide it to an even brighter future to better serve community pharmacists and their patients," added Lonny D. Wilson, D.Ph., Chairman of NCPA's Executive Committee and CEO of Pharmacy Providers of Oklahoma.

"I am absolutely honored to join NCPA and represent independent community pharmacists and the patients we care for each day," Jaeger said. "As the daughter of an independent community pharmacist, and as a pharmacist myself, I understand the critical and growing role neighborhood pharmacies play in our healthcare system as well as the challenges they face.

"Every day, millions of Americans depend on community pharmacists for quality medicines and expert counseling to feel better and lead more productive lives," Jaeger added.  "Community pharmacies not only effectively and efficiently deliver this critical care to consumers, they do so while also substantially reducing overall health care costs. Thus, we need to ensure that independent community pharmacists are indispensible to America's health care system today, tomorrow and beyond."

From 2002-2010, Jaeger served as President and CEO of the Generic Pharmaceutical Association (GPhA).  Jaeger is credited with transforming the association into a powerful voice for the generic industry, developing aggressive and effective public policy, advocacy and communications programs that resulted in numerous legislative and regulatory victories.

Prior to leading GPhA, Jaeger chaired the Food and Drug Practice for the McKenna and Cuneo law firm and, later, Kirkpatrick and Lockhart. She earned a Juris Doctor from Catholic University and a BS in Pharmacy from the University of Rhode Island. Her appointment is effective Nov. 1, 2010.

The National Community Pharmacists Association (NCPA®) represents America's community pharmacists, including the owners of more than 22,700 independent community pharmacies, pharmacy franchises, and chains. Together they represent an $88 billion health-care marketplace, employ over 65,000 pharmacists, and dispense over 40% of all retail prescriptions.
