LOS ANGELES, Sept. 5, 2012 /PRNewswire/ --, a provider of medical training management and reporting solutions for academic hospitals, clinical programs, medical schools and governmental public health agencies, announced today the addition of software solutions that comply with new guidelines put forth by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

In February 2012, ACGME announced the rollout of the Next Accreditation System (NAS) in the New England Journal of Medicine. Implementation of NAS begins in July 2013 with full implementation scheduled for July 2014.

"As one of the largest academic medical centers in the country, our immediate priority following release of NAS was how to operationalize the requirements across our residency and fellowship programs without disrupting our curriculum," said Melvin Blanchard, MD, FACP, Associate Professor of Medicine and Chief of Medical Education at Washington University in St. Louis. "We needed guidance on development of a solution that would meet the outcome and reporting requirements, but also provided the flexibility and convenience we required. is working with us to create a customized solution that meets all of our needs."

More than 9,000 medical residency programs are accredited by ACGME and will be affected by the new NAS requirements. The system requires each program to demonstrate that its residents have the "core competencies and clinical skills to deliver quality patient care and respond to rapid developments in health care delivery." Under the ACGME's next accreditation system:

  • Medical residents and fellows must demonstrate competency in six core areas: patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, systems-based practice, professionalism, and interpersonal skills and communication
  • Teaching institutions are required to develop and publish the specific learning outcomes residents must demonstrate as they progress through training
  • Institutions must submit reports to the ACGME every six months that document each resident's accomplishments in meeting benchmarks for physician competence
  • The ACGME will update the accreditation status of each program yearly based on trends in key performance parameters

According to David P. Melamed, M.D., M.Sc., Founder and CEO, Inc., "The introduction of the new NAS performance-based reporting has residency programs scrambling to implement evaluation tools that capture new variables required for accreditation. Our new software tools are designed to meet reporting needs efficiently and automatically. Institutions and programs can develop streamlined tools that connect their evaluations, milestones, competencies and outcomes in a single data stream. The system is powered by a set of browser-based database and workflow tools that can be accessed by computers and mobile devices."
