Midwest Compassion Center Joins Forces with Acclaimed Cannabis Physician
Date:2/18/2015

SHOREWOOD, Ill., Feb. 18, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Midwest Compassion Center and Dr. Alan Shackelford join forces in the fight to treat epilepsy through the use of medical cannabis at their Will County dispensary.  With growing concerns over the potentially negative side effects of pharmaceuticals and their inability to provide adequate symptom control in as many as 30% of patients with seizures, Dr. Shackelford and MCC will collaborate on research with the goal of developing new treatment options for patients dealing with a debilitating illness or condition, including seizures.

Nicole Van Rensburg, Chief Education Officer for Midwest Compassion Center, remarked "We are delighted to be working with Dr. Shackelford to support his research on the benefits that medical cannabis provides to adults and children suffering from epilepsy and other serious conditions."

Dr. Shackelford will also provide his knowledge and guidance to MCC on an ongoing basis in an effort to enhance patient and physician education programs.

Dr. Shackelford's Background

Dr. Shackelford received his medical degree from the University of Heidelberg and completed postgraduate medical training at the Harvard Medical School in internal medicine, nutrition support and behavioral medicine.  Dr. Shackelford was also a Harvard Research Fellow.

In his practice in Colorado, Dr. Shackelford has pioneered the use of extracts of high CBD/low THC marijuana to reduce treatment-resistant epileptic seizures in children. He and one of his patients were featured in Dr. Sanjay Gupta's documentary "WEED" that aired on CNN. Dr. Shackelford's research and expertise are sought after and cited by many organizations, media sources, and research groups as part of ongoing explorations for using cannabis to treat epilepsy and other serious medical conditions.

Mrs. Van Rensburg further explained "Our dispensing agents will be highly trained to recommend the most suitable cannabinoid profiles and methods of administration to treat each patient's specific condition."  The focus will be on improving the quality of life for patients with an emphasis on wellness, not just alleviating pain or chronic symptoms.

The modern facility will also provide additional services to help manage pain, improve physical conditioning, reduce stress, and adopt better nutritional practices.  MCC will assist low-income or indigent patients through their hardship program.

MCC's mission is to provide patients with personal, compassionate one-on-one care by employing professionally trained, knowledgeable staff who share a common goal of helping patients improve the quality of their lives.  As part of their community oriented approach, MCC will give a portion of all proceeds to local charities and community organizations.
