Microfluidic Systems (MFSI) is Awarded Four New Patents in the Field of Automated Biological Sample Processing and Detection.

FREMONT, Calif., Sept. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Microfluidic Systems, a privately-held company, announced today that they received four new patents in the area of automated biological sample processing and detection. These patents include: number 7,785,868, entitled "Apparatus to Automatically Lyse A Sample".  This patent covers a broad set of claims describing an instrument that controls critical conditions such as temperature, power, and time of ultrasonic energy-based sample lysis protocols. As well, MFSI was awarded patent number, 7,785,869, entitled "Sonication to Selectively Lyse Different Cell Types". This patent describes an apparatus to automate the differential extraction of specific cell types within a mixed sample. Thirdly, a patent was awarded entitled "Integrated Airborne Substance Collection and Detection System", number 7,633,606.  In addition a patent entitled "Automated Particle Collection Off of Fan Blades into a Liquid Buffer" has been allowed, and MFSI is awaiting assignment of that patent number.  These latter two patents are parts of a series of integrated systems developed to perform automated airborne pathogen collection, processing and detection – a key area of strength for MFSI.

"MFSI continues to build a strong intellectual property base in the area of biological sample collection, processing, and detection," Dr. M. Allen Northrup, MFSI President and CEO said. "We have built a repertoire of proprietary technology, expertise and capabilities as exemplified by these new patents," he added.

Microfluidic Systems (MFSI),, was founded in 2001 and is focused on the development of microfluidic systems for automated preparation of and performance of biological assays. MFSI personnel have been involved with the development of automated DNA-based pathogen detection systems and microfluidics for the US Government and commercial markets for over 25 years, including the world's first miniaturized, portable, battery-operated, real-time, polymerase-chain-reaction (PCR)-based detection system.
