Mendelsohn To Talk Personalized Cancer Therapy at Bush Library and Museum April Issues Forum

COLLEGE STATION, Texas, April 16, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The George Bush Presidential Library and Museum presents the free Issues Forum "Personalized Cancer Therapy at MD Anderson Cancer Center" April 25, 7 p.m. CDT at the Annenberg Presidential Conference Center at Texas A&M University.

The presenter is Dr. John Mendelsohn, past president of the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston and the L.E. and Virginia Simmons Fellow in Health and Technology Policy at the James A. Baker III Institute for Public Policy at Rice University.

April is the 60th anniversary of the discovery of the double helix DNA structure by Dr. James Watson and Dr. Francis Crick . The Issues Forum is also the keynote address for the Texas Genetics Society's Annual Meeting.

"It is a special treat for the students to learn from Dr. Mendelsohn, who began his own undergraduate research career in Dr. Watson's laboratory, and now is pioneering the use of genome information for personalized cancer treatment," said Dr. Penny Riggs , associate professor in Texas A&M's Department of Animal Science.

The Issues Forum is presented in conjunction with the exhibit "Genome: The Secret of How Life Works" on display at the Bush Library and Museum through July 5. Designed for all ages, the exhibit explores the nature and impact of advances in genome research through visually-rich environments, interactives, artifacts and multi-media presentations. 

"Genome: The Secret of How Life Works" is a Traveling Exhibit Produced by Evergreen Exhibitions made possible by national title sponsor Pfizer, in collaboration with National Human Genome Research Institute, National Institutes of Health, Department of Health and Human Services and Whitehead Institute/MIT Center for Genome Research.

The exhibit is sponsored by Texas A&M AgriLife Research and presented in cooperation with the Texas A&M University Whole Systems Genomics Initiative, the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences and the Department of Animal Science.
