Introduction & Scope


Diagnostic ultrasound, also called sonography or diagnostic medical sonography, is a noninvasive imaging method that utilizes high-frequency sound waves to produceimages of structures within your body. The images can provide valuable information for diagnosing and treating a variety of diseases and conditions. Ultrasound is sound that is defined as frequency above 20,000 Hertz (Hz). The frequencies that medical ultrasound transducers produce and use in diagnostic radiology range from 2 MHz to approximately 15 MHz, depending on their application. Medical ultrasound transducers contain more than one operating frequency. The following frequencies are a guide to frequencies typically used for ultrasound examination:

- 2.5 MHz: deep abdomen, obstetric and gynecological imaging.

- 3.5 MHz: general abdomen, obstetric and gynecological imaging.

- 5.0 MHz: vascular, breast, pelvic imaging.

- 7.5 MHz: breast, thyroid.

- 10.0 MHz: breast, thyroid, superficial veins, superficial masses, musculoskeletal imaging.

- 15.0 MHz: superficial structures, musculoskeletal imaging.

The application of ultrasound as a diagnostic tool emerged during the 1950s when innovators such as Professor Ian Donald who working in Glasgow, Scotland, pioneeredthe use of ultrasound in monitoring fetal development. Other early advances included the development of B-mode ultrasound imaging and contact scanning by DouglassHowry and others. These technological advances paved the way for the use of ultrasound in a wide variety of clinical applications. Some of the more recent innovations currently available on the market include the use of hand-carried ultrasound units for the anesthesia and emergency wards, the emergence of hand-carried ultrasound (HCU) devices, and technological advances in three-dimensional (3-D) and four-dimensional (4-D) ultrasound imaging, as well as significant improvements in image quality, the use of ultrasound contrast agents to improve sensitivity for the detection of tumors, and the emergence of sonoelastography as a method of measuring tissue stiffness to help diagnose liver fibrosis staging, thyroid nodules, and lymph node and indeterminate breast lump characterization.
