McCaughey Urges Use of First NYS Hospital Infection Report
Date:7/5/2009

NEW YORK, June 30 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Betsy McCaughey of the Committee to Reduce Infection Deaths (RID) urges families to make use of hospital infection rates made available by the NYS Department of Health today. "Now patients can learn which hospitals in their area have the lowest infection rates - and steer clear of those hospitals that are dangerous to their health," she says.

Betsy McCaughey, a Ph.D., founded RID in 2004 with a key goal to make hospital infection rates publicly known. McCaughey has campaigned tirelessly across 25 states for this disclosure.

Dr. McCaughey says the New York State infection report needs to be improved to include rates for methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Clostridium difficile (C. diff). More critically, the public should not be misled by risk adjustment infection, but should consider the average infection rate for each hospital and give preference to the lowest one.

Betsy McCaughey is Founder and Chairman of the Committee to Reduce Infection Deaths, and a former Lt. Governor of New York State.
