La AF se produce cuando partes del atrio emiten señales eléctricas no coordinadas que hacen que las cámaras bombeen demasiado rápido y de forma irregular, sin permitir que la sangre se bombee por completo[14]. Como resultado, la sangre podría estancarse, coagularse y producir una trombosis, que es el asesino número uno en los países desarrollados y en vías de desarrollo. Si se deja un coágulo de sangre en el atrio, podría alojarse potencialmente en una arteria en otras partes del cuerpo, sobre todo en el cerebro. Un coágulo de sangre en una arteria del cerebro produce una apoplejía. El 92% de los ataques de apoplejía mortales son causados por trombosis[15]. Las personas con AF padecen también un riesgo elevado de fallo cardiaco, fatiga crónica y otros problemas de ritmo cardiaco[16]. Las apoplejías son una causa destacada de fallecimiento y discapacidad a largo plazo en todo el mundo - cada año, 6,7 millones de personas fallecen[17] y 5 millones de personas quedan discapacitados de forma permanente[18].
