Incluyendo los pacientes que habían sido diagnosticados con AF no-valvular en las últimas 6 semanas y que padecían al menos un factor de riesgo adicional para apoplejía, y de este modo, eran candidatos potenciales para la terapia anticoagulante de cara a la prevención de los coágulos de sangre que llevan a una apoplejía. Se deja a juicio del investigador clínico la identificación del factor(es) de riesgo de apoplejía del paciente, que no se restringen a los que se incluyen en las puntuaciones de riesgo establecidas. Los pacientes se incluyen reciban o no terapia anticoagulante, así que las estrategias de tratamiento actuales o futuras y fallos se pueden conocer de forma adecuada en relación a los perfiles de riesgo individuales de los pacientes.

La carga de la AF  

Hasta el 2% de la población mundial presenta AF[1]. En torno a 6 millones de personas en Europa[8], entre 3 y 5 millones de personas en Estaos Unidos[9],[10] y hasta 8 millones de personas en China padecen AF[11],[12]. Se estima que su prevalencia al menos se duplicará para el año 2050 al tiempo que envejece la población. La AF otorga un aumento de cinco veces en relación al riego de padecer apoplejía, y uno de cada cinco ataques de apoplejía se atribuye a arritmias. Las apoplejías isquémicas en asociación con la AF a menudo son mortales, y los pacientes que sobreviven frecuentemente y de forma severa suelen quedar discapacitados y es más probable que padezcan recurrencia frente a los pacientes con otras causas de apoplejía.
