Lo screening trial sul cancro al seno conclude che l'utilizzo della mammografia 3D in combinazione con un esame del seno 2D rileva un numero di tumori significativamente maggiore rispetto al solo esame del seno 2D

l cancro è stato riscontrato in tutte le densità di tessuto del seno, da denso ad adiposo. Allo stesso tempo, non è stato riscontrato aumento nella rilevazione di carcinoma duttale in situ (DCIS), che non è invasivo ed è citato dagli esperti di screening mammografico come potenzialmente sovradiagnosticato.  

Come conseguenza del grande aumento nella rilevazione di tumori invasivi rispetto agli in situ, gli autori del documento affermano " Forse la nostra osservazione più importante è che con l'arma della mammografia più tomosintesi, il vantaggio effettivo, in termini di risultati probabilmente migliori grazie alla diagnosi precoce, potrebbe essere maggiore rispetto alla semplice differenza nel conteggio complessivo o nel numero di cancri rilevati".

Il trial di Oslo è il primo studio prospettico su larga scala a dimostrare che i tumori aggiuntivi riscontrati con la mammografia 3D in combinazione con la mammografia 2D erano invasivi: proprio il tipo di tumori che desideriamo diagnosticare e curare per tempo. La mammografia 3D rappresenta la migliore tecnologia di screening al seno ad oggi, in quanto rileva un numero significativamente maggiore di tumori invasivi riducendo inoltre i falsi positivi. La maggior parte delle altre tecnologie di acquisizione delle immagini per lo screening richiede agli utenti di fare dei compromessi in termini di specificità (tasso di richiamo) a favore della sensibilità (rilevazione del cancro). Noi riteniamo che il valore della mammografia 3D nello screening del cancro al seno sia il più interessante".
