LIVE VIA SATELLITE: Physician Demonstrates New Medical Technology to Combat Back Pain without Major Surgery
Date:6/22/2012

SARASOTA, Fla., June 22, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- It's a high tech day for the healthcare professionals at Coastal Orthopedics & Pain Management.  New technology in medicine beamed via satellite as an educational opportunity for other physicians.

The live demonstration was part of PAIN 2012 a pain management physicians' conference taking place in Miami, FL this weekend, sponsored by the West Virginia branch of the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians.

Doctors gathering in Miami watched for 3 hours as Coastal Orthopedics' Pain Management specialist Lora Brown, MD, walked them through two cutting edge procedures, live via satellite from Coastal's East Surgery Center in Lakewood Ranch, FL.

The first patient was implanted during the live demonstration with a neurostimulation device to manage their chronic pain. Dr. Brown used a new surgical tool called the Epiducer™ lead delivery system created by St. Jude Medical. This tool provides a simple solution to implanting leads used in the therapy through a single small entry point. These leads are then connected to a neurostimulator that can be programmed to manage a patient's pain. Before the Epiducer system, the placement of neurostimulation paddle leads was only possible through a laminotomy, a more invasive surgical procedure that typically requires removal of part of the vertebral bone.

Slightly larger than a U.S. silver dollar, neurostimulator's deliver mild electrical pulses to the spinal cord, which interrupt or mask the pain signals' transmission to the brain.

In the second live procedure, Dr. Brown demonstrated the implantation of a device using the Disc-FX System, created by elliquence. This tool is an innovative, minimal access spine system designed to efficiently access the damaged disc without injury to surrounding disc anatomy. Disc-FX permits multiple treatment options compared to other 'single treatment' devices
