Doch trotz einiger Fortschritte bei der Anerkennung der entscheidenden Rolle der Selbstfürsorge ist diese noch nicht zu einem grundlegenden Bestandteil wirksamer Gesundheitssysteme geworden. Diese sind nach wie vor auf die Behandlung der Krankheiten ausgelegt. Die Vorteile der Selbstfürsorge werden auch von politischen Entscheidungsträgern und der allgemeinen Öffentlichkeit noch nicht ausreichend aufgegriffen, um wirklich etwas bewirken zu können.

Ziel der internationalen Bewegung für Selbstfürsorge ist es, die Anerkennung des Selbstfürsorgetags am 24. Juli durch die Vereinten Nationen zu erreichen. "Durch Bewusstseinsbildung wollen wir erreichen, dass die Menschen sich aktiv um ihre Gesundheit kümmern. Außerdem wollen wir Regierungen dazu motivieren, die Selbstfürsorge sowohl innerhalb als auch außerhalb der aktuellen Gesundheitssysteme zu fördern", erklärte Dr. Guo.
