Industry Leader BioStorage Technologies Broadens Sample Management Operations to Include Laboratory Sample Preparation Services
Date:10/11/2010

INDIANAPOLIS, Oct. 11 /PRNewswire/ -- BioStorage Technologies, a global leader in sample management, cold chain logistics and biomaterial storage for the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, has expanded its sample management offerings to include laboratory sample preparation services, including sample aliquoting and nucleic acid extraction and verification.

As the need for comprehensive sample management continues to grow, BioStorage Technologies has seen increased demand for end-to-end sample management services, including sample preparation and storage. In response, BioStorage Technologies' U.S. and European facilities will now offer nucleic acid extraction and verification services in addition to sample aliquoting and PBMC (Peripheral Blood Mononuclear Cells) processing. All services will be supported by automated liquid handling technology to ensure the accuracy and precision needed for high-throughput testing and screening.

The integration of these ancillary services allows BioStorage Technologies to provide customers with a sample renewal and extension process to maximize their samples for comprehensive research and development activities. Once samples are processed, aliquots of blood and/or DNA products can be allocated for future testing by using informed sample prioritization through the company's proprietary tracking and inventory management system, ISISS®. This process ensures samples are removed, transported, processed and replaced to storage in a compliant, consistent and efficient fashion.

"Many times, errors that can affect the results of laboratory tests occur in the pre-analytical phase," said Cathy Michael, global head of sample management operations, BioStorage Technologies. "By extending our technical expertise to include sample preparation services, we can help to mitigate the risk of variables that have a negative impact on sample integrity."

The addition of this new service offering gives BioStorage Technologies the ability to provide customers with improved control over the quality of samples that are shipped to central or referral laboratories for traditional clinical trial laboratory testing services.

"Renewable sample resourcing enhances our current biorepository activities, and further validates our commitment to being the benchmark in sample management," said Lori Ball, chief operating officer, BioStorage Technologies. "By expanding our capabilities and technological capacity we will ultimately lower costs for our customers and improve quality of samples stored for testing by streamlining sample preparation processes."

BioStorage Technologies stores and manages specimens from the world's largest biopharmaceutical companies and CROs, and as a practitioner of Good Storage Practices, the company is committed to ensuring sample integrity throughout the complete sample life cycle. Utilizing ISISS, the industry's most advanced sample security and web-based tracking tool, BioStorage also provides a complete FDA-compliant audit trail annotated on every sample.
