Increasing Rate of Tooth Extractions Among Some UK Children Highlights Poor Diet and Brushing Habits, Says Dr. Bostani’s Advanced Dental
Date:4/1/2019

A March 12 article from the Manchester Evening News reports on the excessively high number of children in poorer parts of the United Kingdom who require tooth extractions. These children, often local to more rural areas, are having teeth pulled in much higher numbers than their urban contemporaries. While the article does not list a specific cause for this unfortunate trend, the authorities in the Greater Manchester area have begun new dental education programs in an effort to reverse this trend. Dr. Bostani’s Advanced Dental is not surprised to hear of this trend from across the Atlantic, saying that an increasing number of children, regardless of their upbringing, are suffering from various tooth-related ailments in Southern California as well as in the UK.

Dr. Bostani’s Advanced Dental explains that diets high in sugar intake are likely to take a heavy toll on anyone’s teeth, but children are especially susceptible as almost never really understand the consequences of poor eating and hygiene habits and that a combination of the two almost always lead to dental issues, albeit to differing degrees of severity. Furthermore, many parents tend to be too lax in bringing their children in for regular checkups to prevent unpleasant conditions from developing, says the clinic. It says that all it takes to challenge the trend towards more child dental decay and extractions is for parents to enforce better dental hygiene habits, like brushing and flossing regularly, and to cut down on sugary drinks and treats. The dental office adds that, if parents are able to do so in addition to bringing their children in for regular checkups, the chances of serious dental issues arising will likely plummet.

Dr. Bostani’s Advanced Dental notes that too many parents will wait for an issue like a toothache to appear before taking their children to see a dentist. By this point, the concern may already be too far developed and costly and difficult treatments, such as extractions and dental implants, may already be necessary. Worse, poor dental health as a child can lead to much more serious concerns in other areas of health, like cardiovascular issues. The doctor adds that these issues can easily be avoided, or at least limited, if parents commit to regular checkups and impart strong dental hygiene habits.
