Inaugural HITLAB Innovators Summit and HITLAB World Cup Highlights

NEW YORK, Dec. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Earlier this week, the inaugural HITLAB Innovators SummitSM brought together leaders, investors, and entrepreneurs in health, technology, and design to accelerate advancements in healthcare. The event, hosted by HITLABSM, a healthcare innovation and teaching lab, and chaired by Dr. Adbulrahman El-Sayed featured expert talks on a diverse range of topics to improve and invest in patient care. Highlights from the Summit included a keynote speech by Dr. Robert Kelly, president of NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital; a special panel on women in health and technology produced by event partner Clinton Foundation's Health Matters Initiative and moderated by Saatchi & Saatchi Wellness' Sharon Suchotliff; a demo booth from the NewYork-Presbyterian Innovation Center, the event's Platinum Sponsor; workshops produced by ProtoHack and Blueprint Health; and demos by Kognito, LDLN, and HITLAB World Cup finalists. The conclusion of the Summit featured exciting presentations by finalists from the HITLAB World CupSM, an international healthcare innovation challenge.

Notes from the HITLAB Innovators Summit
Funding technology: Dr. Robert Kelly from NewYork-Presbyterian stated that technology funding must be spent wisely. Investing in innovation should pay for itself over time.
Drug development: Dr. Ted Witek suggested that innovators needed to improve process, increase integration, and create therapies for health and happiness.
Design-thinking in healthcare and technology: Dr. Sumu Sethi of Roche asked the audience if empathy and clinical pharma trials don't belong in the same sentence. And then said, "Think again."
Medical innovation: James Sweeney of Tangramcare said reimbursement drives innovation strategy.
Investing in start-ups: Harsha Murthy of Consummate Capital told the audience that we have to span divisions in our industry. It's all about collaboration and partnerships.
Start-up advice: Jeremy Sohn from MPM Capital stated that inexperienced health tech founders needed to find advisors with experience.
Reimagining healthcare: Unity Stoakes of StartUp Health noted that we are living through a moment of creative destruction in healthcare.
Wearable technologies: Sharon Suchotliff from Saatchi & Saatchi Wellness stated that 27 million wearable devices sold this past year, but they don't always meet wellness goals of women.
