(Hologic o la Società) (NASDAQ: HOLX), leader nello sviluppo, nella produzione e nella fornitura di sistemi diagnostici e medicali di acquisizione delle immagini e di prodotti chirurgici di alta qualità al servizio delle esigenze di salute delle donne, ha annunciato oggi la pubblicazione dei risultati finali di uno studio prospettico condotto su vasta scala che mette a confronto per lo screening del tumore al seno l'utilizzo della tomosintesi insieme con la mammografia 2D di Hologic rispetto alla mammografia 2D convenzionale. Lo studio è pubblicato online in attesa della stampa su The Lancet Oncology.

Lo studio, "Integration of 3D digital mammography with tomosynthesis for population breast-cancer screening (STORM): a prospective comparison study,"[i] (Integrazione della mammografia digitale 3D con la tomosintesi per lo screening della popolazione per il tumore al seno (STORM): uno studio comparativo prospettico) è stato condotto da un team di ricercatori italiani e australiani, rappresentato dalla Professoressa Associata Nehmat Houssami, presso la School of Public Health dell'Università di Sydney in Australia. Lo studio si è occupato di valutare se le mammografia 2D integrata con la tomosintesi fosse più efficace nello scoprire i tumori e ridurre i falsi positivi rispetto allo screening con la sola 2D. L'analisi si è basata sull'esame di 7.292 donne con un'età media di 58 anni, il cui screening è stato effettuato in due Centri in Italia.

L'uso della tecnologia di tomisintesi al seno di Hologic ha aumentato in modo significativo i tassi di rilevazione del tumore e contemporaneamente ha ridotto i falsi positivi. I significativi risultati comprendono:
