Huntington Hospital Surgeon Performs First Single Port Resection on Colorectal Cancer Patient in CA

PASADENA, Calif., Dec. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Howard Kaufman, MD, medical director of the Huntington Hospital Cancer Center, performed the first single-port resection on a colorectal cancer patient in California last week. In a typical resection there are three ports involved in a minimally invasive procedure, or one long incision across the belly in an open procedure.

Minimally invasive procedures usually offer shorter lengths of stay, less pain and quicker return to normal activities. Plus, a single-port surgery has a much nicer cosmetic result and there is less chance of wound infection and hernia. In cancer patients, a single-port procedure may mean a quicker surgical recovery and thus faster time to chemotherapy.
