MARINA DEL RAY, Calif., March 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Dr. Richard Merkin, President and CEO of Heritage Provider Network is pleased to announce that the Richard Merkin Fellowship in Emergency Medicine and Tropical Medicine has been supporting efforts to build USC Emergency Medicine residencies on both an international and national level, which will benefit the medical relief efforts in Chile. There are now two Emergency Medicine residencies running in Santiago.
USC is in discussions with the Chilean Undersecretary of Health to facilitate mobilizing a medical team to Concepcion, Chile. Concepcion is one of the hot spots along with Puerta Sevedra and Talca. The total population in these three hot spots is 350,000. Chile is in dire need of dialysis resources, portable hospitals, generators, water and supplies. USC has been at the forefront for the last 10 years in the emergence of Emergency Medicine as a specialty in Chile.
"It's critically important that we support Emergency and Tropical Medicine programs internationally as well as domestically. In times of disaster our ability to provide quality aid and respond immediately to their needs is greatly enhanced through these programs," said Dr. Merkin. "I want to be supportive in any way we can to the people of Chile, our hearts go out to the victims of this disaster. HPN recognizes their critical health care needs and we are responding in kind."
Heritage Provider Network recently had sent a team to Haiti to aid the victims of that devastating earthquake.
