GARDEN CITY, New York, Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- HealthCare Partners, IPA and CEO Dr. Richard Merkin recognize and congratulate seniors enrolled with HCP, IPA for their efforts to take the country's most vital concern, health care reform, directly to members of Congress, expressing their concerns regarding changes in Medicare.

Dr. John Gastright, Senior Medical Director at HCP, IPA accompanied Sheila and Arthur Tower along with Priority Care Case Manager, Patrice Theobold, RN, to meet with members of Congress letting them know that they like their current level of care and that it works well for them and has made a critical difference in the quality of their lives.

"I'm a breast cancer survivor," said 74-year-old Sheila Tower. "And my care from HCP, IPA has made it so much easier to cope with my desire to beat and overcome this disease. There's no way I could have made it without my care case coordinator, Linda Cervelli, who coordinated all my tests, doctor visits, chemotherapy, referrals and paperwork. I'm alive because of this and I wanted my legislators to know first hand, this is not a place to make any cost cuts."

Her husband, 84-year-old Arthur Tower who suffers from Parkinson's disease, agrees. "We are both enrolled in Medicare Advantage and our care is preventative in that we are able to discuss our medical concerns and diagnosis before they get to the critical stage, saving us time and money, adding to the quality of our lives. We have peace of mind and less stress because we know we can reach out to HCP, IPA 24/7 and if necessary, they will send a nurse or doctor to our home."

The Towers, Dr. Gastright and Theobold met with Congressman Gary Ackerman, Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy and senior level staff members of Senator Kristen Gillibrand, expressing a clear, direct message to protect Medicare Advantage. The lawmakers were receptive and eager to learn more about HCP, IPA and how it implements health care coverage. Both Congressman Ackerman and Congresswoman McCarthy (herself a former nurse) expressed interest in the personal stories from Mr. and Mrs. Tower and asked their respective staff to follow up with HCP, IPA. Senior staffers with Senator Gillibrand let the group know they are aware of the aspects of Medicare Advantage that have been successful and cost effective.

"HCP, IPA implements Medicare Advantage in a manner that is far more satisfactory and economical than the rest of the nation," explained Dr. Gastright. "By offering lower out-of-pocket costs for seniors, we can ensure more seniors have access to affordable, coordinated, preventative care. We can provide a much broader range of services vital to an aging population such as prescriptions, vision, hearing, dental, fitness, and mental health. Our case managers work closely with patients checking on them to coordinate care and reduce hospital admissions, where the highest costs occur."

HCP, IPA has also made substantial investment in using electronic medical records insuring accuracy, saving time and costs as well. "HCP, IPA represents a successful working model of managed, coordinated, patient-doctor centric, cost effective care that is similar in philosophy to the Mayo and Cleveland Clinics. It is important as part of our community outreach that we encourage our seniors to take their concerns directly to Members of Congress letting them know in a smart, rational manner what has made an impact on their health care and their lives," said Dr. Richard Merkin, CEO of HCP, IPA.

"Encouraging our seniors to let their voices be heard and know their experiences provides us with needed feedback as we constantly are evaluating our care and services," said Kathy Nix, Executive Vice President of HCP, IPA. "We appreciate their efforts and want them to know we value their input."
